Shuidiao Getou: When Will the Bright Moon Appear?
Grandevity Studio presents its first classical reimagined single — bringing Su Shi’s legendary Song Dynasty lyric poem into the sound world of modern Chinese pop.
In the rush of modern city life, surrounded by glowing screens, traffic lights, deadlines, and restless noise, how often do we still look up at the moon?
How often do we pause long enough to hear the quieter voice within ourselves?
Classical literature should not remain only as yellowed pages preserved in archives. In its own time, poetry was alive. It was recited, sung, remembered, and shared. It carried love, longing, exile, reunion, loneliness, and the human search for meaning beneath the same sky.
This is the founding vision of Grandevity Studio: to awaken classical Chinese poetry through modern sound and visual language, creating new musical experiences for timeless literary works.
Today, we officially release the first single in our classical reimagining series: Shuidiao Getou: When Will the Bright Moon Appear?
Inspired by Su Shi’s immortal lyric poem 《水調歌頭・明月幾時有》, this single transforms one of the most beloved works in Chinese literature into a modern Mandopop healing ballad.
A Modern Reimagining Beyond Traditional Classical Music
For this release, we did not simply layer traditional instruments over an ancient poem. Instead, we approached the work as a bold cross-cultural and cross-era musical experiment.
Su Shi’s words are placed within a Mandopop Diva-inspired arrangement: an ethereal female vocal, delicate piano textures, cinematic strings, and a gradually unfolding emotional structure. The result is not a solemn “ancient tune” meant only for quiet study rooms, but a modern healing song for contemporary listeners.
Close your eyes and press play.
You may feel as though you are driving through an open road at night, the window slightly lowered, the wind moving through the car, while moonlight from nine hundred years ago quietly enters the present.
This is not only a song about the moon. It is a song about distance, longing, acceptance, and the gentle wisdom of letting life remain incomplete.
Official 4K Music Video
A full 4K visual music video has been created for this release.
Moonlight, open roads, wide fields, flowing shadows, and cinematic visual textures come together to create an immersive emotional journey. The MV follows the philosophical arc of Su Shi’s poem: from questioning the heavens, to confronting loneliness, and finally to accepting the imperfection of human life.
We recommend wearing headphones and viewing in full screen. Join us beneath the moonlight.
[Original Chinese Lyrics]
[Verse 1]
[Bridge]
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
[Chorus]
[Outro]
[English Lyric Translation]
[Verse 1]
When will the bright moon appear?
I raise my wine and ask the blue heavens.
I do not know, in the celestial palace above,
what year this night may be.
[Verse 2]
I long to ride the wind and return,
yet I fear the jade towers and crystal halls,
for it must be too cold in those heights.
I dance with my clear shadow,
but how could that compare with being among people?
[Bridge]
The moon turns past the crimson pavilion,
leans low through the carved window,
and shines upon the sleepless.
Surely it should not bear resentment;
why, then, is it always full when people part?
[Chorus]
People have sorrow and joy, parting and reunion.
The moon has dimness and brightness, fullness and loss.
Such things have never been perfect since ancient times.
May we all live long,
and share the beauty of the moon across a thousand miles.
[Outro]
May we all live long,
and share the beauty of the moon across a thousand miles.
“May We All Live Long, and Share the Moon Across a Thousand Miles”
The most famous lines of this poem remain among the most tender expressions in Chinese literary history:
但願人長久,千里共嬋娟。
People experience sorrow and joy, separation and reunion.
The moon also waxes and wanes.
Nothing in this world has ever been complete.
And yet, Su Shi does not end in despair. He turns absence into blessing. He transforms distance into shared moonlight.
The person we miss may be far away, but if both of us are under the same moon, then longing itself becomes a form of connection. That is the emotional power of this song: it does not erase separation. It teaches us how to live with it.
Why This Poem Still Heals Modern Listeners
Although Su Shi wrote this poem during the Northern Song Dynasty, its emotional world remains deeply contemporary.
Modern people also experience distance.
Distance from loved ones.
Distance from home.
Distance from the self we once imagined we would become.
The city may have changed. The screen may have replaced the candle. The highway may have replaced the ancient road. But the human heart still looks for the same things: reunion, comfort, forgiveness, and a light that can be shared even across separation.
That is why Shuidiao Getou: When Will the Bright Moon Appear? is more than a musical adaptation.
It is a meditative listening experience.
A moonlit road song.
A quiet emotional therapy for those living under modern pressure.
About the Creative Project
This single marks the beginning of Grandevity Studio’s Classical Reimagining Series.
The project is dedicated to giving new musical life to classical Chinese poetry through modern arrangement, cinematic sound design, AI-assisted music production, and contemporary visual storytelling.
Our aim is not to replace the original works, but to create a bridge. A bridge between ancient poetry and modern listeners. Between literary memory and streaming-era music. Between the moon of the Song Dynasty and the night sky we still look up to today.

Closing Reflection
All reunions are, in some way, reunions across time.
A poet raises his cup under the moon.
A modern listener presses play in the city.
Nine hundred years pass, and still the same moonlight reaches us.
Thank you for being here.
May we all live long.
May we share the same moon, even across a thousand miles.
