Qinghui Zuoban — Moonlight as My Companion
A modern Chinese poetic ballad inspired by Li Bai’s timeless poem Quiet Night Thoughts. Explore a silent scroll of night and homesickness.
A thousand years ago, on a silent night, moonlight fell before a traveler’s bed.
He looked up at the bright moon.
Then he lowered his head and thought of home.
With only twenty Chinese characters, Li Bai captured one of the most universal emotions in human life: the loneliness of being far away from where one belongs.
There is no grand narrative in Quiet Night Thoughts. No elaborate sorrow. No dramatic farewell. Only a single movement — looking up, then lowering the head — and in that quiet gesture, the idea of home rises from the moonlight.
Today, Grandevity Studio officially releases the second work in its Classical Literature Reimagined in Music project:
Qinghui Zuoban — Moonlight as My Companion
This is an original Chinese-style song inspired by Li Bai’s 《靜夜思》. It is not a simple rewriting of the poem. Instead, it is a modern musical reconstruction for contemporary listeners — using melody, minimal arrangement, and oriental visual language to transform a single moment of homesickness into a long, silent scroll of night.
A Lamp, a Guesthouse, and a Moonlit Room
In creating Qinghui Zuoban, we deliberately avoided the excessive ornamentation often found in conventional Chinese-style music.
There are no galloping horses.
No heroic frontier battles.
No overwhelming drums or epic emotional explosions.
Instead, all sound is drawn inward — into one quiet guesthouse late at night. The spiritual backbone of the song is found in these four lines:
行人聽漏久,一念入蒼茫。
A guesthouse. A long-burning night lamp. A west wind passing through old clothes. A traveler listening to the water clock through the depth of night.
The homesickness in this song is not shouted. It is restrained almost to silence. It exists in the faint trembling of an oil lamp, in the cold air touching the sleeve, and in the slow rhythm of time passing.
The song’s true emotional gesture is this:
To let the sorrow of a thousand miles tremble inside half a lamp of fading light.
Here, longing is not spoken directly. It is revealed by moonlight, a dim lamp, the sound of the night watch, and a paper window.
“Too Warm, and Yet Too Cold”: The Double Temperature of Moonlight
The emotional center of the chorus is this line:
今夜的月亮,太暖,也太寒。
Tonight’s moon is too warm, and yet too cold.
The moon is warm because it brings back memories of home — the old doorway, familiar faces, family, and the place one longs to return to.
But the same moon is also cold, because it shines upon the traveler’s guesthouse, the sleepless night, the worn clothes, and the road home that cannot be reached immediately.
This is the deepest contradiction in Quiet Night Thoughts:
Home feels close, because it is present in the moonlight.
And yet home remains far away, because the traveler is still here, alone.
For this reason, Qinghui Zuoban does not turn homesickness into loud sorrow. It is more like lighting a small lamp in the middle of a silent night, allowing the listener to slowly recognize their own idea of home between warmth and cold.
Revisiting Classical Literature in the Digital Age
Grandevity Studio has always been interested in how classical culture can be re-expressed through digital media.
We believe classical literature is not a relic locked inside old books. It is a living spiritual resource — something that can be reinterpreted, re-heard, and re-entered into contemporary life. Qinghui Zuoban is one attempt in that direction.
We take the simplest movements in Li Bai’s poem — “raising the head” and “lowering the head” — and translate them into musical silence, visual slow motion, breathing space in subtitles, and almost invisible emotional ripples in the sound.
In the visual concept, the MV uses oriental ink-wash aesthetics, cold moonlight, a paper window, a fading lamp, and the ancient sound of the night watch as its central imagery.
The video does not pursue dense storytelling. Instead, it unfolds slowly, presenting one traveler’s night away from home: wind moving across the paper window, the long night dripping away, and moonlight shining back toward an old doorway in memory.
We hope that after watching this MV, the audience does not feel as though they have merely watched a story. We hope they feel as though they have spent one quiet night inside a cold moonlit guesthouse, keeping company with someone who is thinking of home.
Official Music Video
For the best experience, we recommend listening with headphones, dimming the screen slightly, and entering the song in a quiet environment.

📜 Lyrics: 《清輝作伴》 Moonlight as My Companion
[Original Chinese Lyrics]
[Verse 1]
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
[Chorus]
[Outro]
[English Lyric Translation]
[Verse 1]
Before my bed, the bright moonlight,
I wonder if it is frost upon the ground.
I raise my head to gaze at the moon,
then lower it, thinking of home.
[Verse 2]
The guesthouse night lamp burns long,
the west wind passes through my worn clothes.
The traveler listens long to the night watch,
and one thought drifts into the vast distance.
[Chorus]
This night, the guesthouse lamp fades,
and the wind chills so many hopes.
The candlelight deep in the night
shines upon the damp traces on my old traveler’s clothes.
By the cold window, a lonely shadow
quietly watches.
The sorrow from a thousand miles away
is reflected until half a fading lamp begins to tremble.
Tonight’s moon is too warm,
and yet too cold.
How can I hide
this sigh that cannot be spoken?
[Bridge]
The wind passes over the paper window,
the night watch drips the whole night away.
And my longing follows that beam of light
back to the old doorway.
[Chorus]
This night, the guesthouse lamp fades,
and the wind chills so many hopes.
The candlelight deep in the night
shines upon the damp traces on my old traveler’s clothes.
By the cold window, a lonely shadow
quietly watches.
The sorrow from a thousand miles away
is reflected until half a fading lamp begins to tremble.
Tonight’s moon is too warm,
and yet too cold.
How can I hide
this sigh that cannot be spoken?
[Outro]
The road as a traveler is cold,
the dream of return is far away.
Only this small heart remains,
with moonlight as its companion.
Why “Moonlight as My Companion”?
The Chinese title 清輝作伴 may be translated as “Moonlight as My Companion.”
- “清輝” refers to the clear, quiet radiance of the moon. It is not merely light. In Chinese poetic tradition, moonlight often carries distance, memory, reunion, homesickness, and spiritual solitude.
- “作伴” means to keep company.
Together, the title suggests a deeply restrained emotional state:
The traveler is alone, but not entirely without company.
The night is cold, but not entirely empty.
The moon cannot bring him home, but it can stay with him through the long night.
This is the quiet emotional power of the song.
It does not promise reunion.
It does not erase loneliness.
It simply gives the listener a small light to sit with.

Closing Reflection
A traveler raises his head.
A moon hangs above the night.
A thousand years pass.
Still, somewhere in the modern world, another person sits quietly before a screen, hearing the same loneliness in a new melody.
Perhaps home is far away.
Perhaps the road back is not yet open.
But for this night, there is still moonlight.
And sometimes, that is enough.
