Publishing Kiwi Defenders as a Modern HTML5 Web Game

How we tackled cross-domain storage, asynchronous advertisement flows, and compliance to ship a seamless browser game.

Shipping a browser game in 2026 involves much more than simply uploading files to a website.

To prepare Kiwi Defenders for distribution across major HTML5 gaming portals, the codebase underwent extensive compliance cleanup and optimization.

This included:

  • Removing unnecessary external scripts.
  • Minimizing intrusive browser behavior.
  • Improving iframe compatibility.
  • Restructuring advertisement handling systems.

The objective was to create a stable experience across embedded gaming platforms without sacrificing monetization potential.

Modernizing Advertisement Flow

Earlier builds occasionally encountered transition issues when advertisements interrupted page navigation.

To solve this, the advertisement system was rebuilt around Promise-based asynchronous event handling. The game now pauses safely during ad playback and only resumes navigation once the ad lifecycle fully resolves.

This significantly improved stability during:

  1. Level transitions
  2. Reward claims
  3. Interstitial playback events

Solving Cross-Domain Save Problems

One of the less glamorous challenges of HTML5 publishing is persistent save storage.

Because browser games often run inside cross-domain iframes, standard localStorage behavior can become unreliable depending on browser privacy restrictions.

To avoid lost progression, Kiwi Defenders integrates platform-compatible storage APIs that safely preserve:

  • Campaign progress
  • Global XP
  • Unlockables
  • Tactical upgrades

Rewarded Ads Without Breaking Gameplay

Monetization systems were intentionally designed to remain optional.

Players can watch rewarded advertisements to gain bonus XP, but progression remains fully achievable through normal gameplay. The reward structure exists primarily as a convenience mechanic for players who want to accelerate upgrades after difficult campaign stages.

Balancing monetization around player choice rather than interruption was a major design priority throughout development.
